Jobs/Welfare

 

 

· Employment has risen by almost 187’852 (4.9%) since the comparable period (Dec-Feb 1998 to Jan-Mar 2008)

· Claimant unemployment has fallen by 52’240 (40%) since 1997  (Aug 1997 – Aug 2008)

· Long-term unemployment has fallen by 31’100 (82.1%) since 1997  (Aug 1997 – Aug 2008)

· The New Deal for 18 to 24-year-olds has helped to cut long-term youth unemployment by more than two-thirds since 1997

· 554,600 families in South East are receiving Working Tax Credits and/or Child Tax Credits (April 2008)

· Nearly 1,600,000 pensioners have seen the biggest rise in basic state pension for a generation

· Nearly 520,000 pensioners aged 75 or over are eligible for free TV licences (one per household)

· Over 1,700,000 pensioners got the winter fuel payment last winter worth £200 per household

Health  (South East Coast SHA/South Central SHA)

 

· There are 1,536 MORE consultants and 863 MORE GPs as well an estimated 7,043 MORE nurses and an estimated 876 MORE dentists since 1997.

· There is an estimated total of 28,767 MORE NHS staff since 1997.

· 12 patients waiting over 26 weeks (as at August 2008) for in-patient treatment compared to over 52,000 in 1997.

· 22 patients waiting over 13 weeks (as at August 2008) for a first out-patient, compared to over 25,000 in March 1998.

· 96.9% of patients diagnosed with cancer are treated within 62 days of an urgent GP referral (June 2008) [South Central SHA].

· 96.8% of patients diagnosed with cancer are treated within 62 days of an urgent GP referral (June 2008) [South East Coast SHA].

· 98.4% of patients seen within 4 hours at A&E (June 2008) compared to 85.9% in June 2003 [South Central SHA].

· 98.4% of patients seen within 4 hours at A&E (June 2008) compared to 88.6% in June 2003 [South East Coast SHA].

· 8 NHS Walk-In Centres across the two SHA areas.

· 35 CT scanners, 17 MRI scanners and 21 LINACs scanners installed since 1997.

· 8 buildings open to patients through NHS LIFT [across both SHA areas] with a further 2 buildings [in the South Central SHA area] under construction. Examples include:

· £13.2m East Oxford Health Centre opened in March 2007.  The centre will also house Oxfordshire PCT’s dental services for patients with special needs along with the dental access service for those who cannot access local NHS dental care within the general dental services.  It will also be the location of the countywide out of hours emergency dental service.

· 15 [£692m] PFI/public capital funded hospital build schemes open with a further 4 [£698m] under construction [across both SHA areas].

· Funding up from £6.7bn in 2003/04 to £11.1bn in 2008/09

Recorded crime, 2004/05 – 2007/08: South East region:

• Total revenue funding per pupil aged 3-19 increased by 35.2% between 1997-98 and 2005-06 against an England average of 39.7%.  In 2008-09, the South East region will receive on average £3951 per pupil under the Dedicated Schools Grant (DSG) compared to the England average of £4066.

NB: 2005-06 figures cannot be compared to DSG as the funding methodology changed in 2006-07.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

• 11 year olds (2007 KS2 revised): English – up 15%pts from 66% in 1997 to 81%; Maths – up 14%pts from 63% in 1997 to 77%.

 

• 11 year olds (2008 KS2 provisional): English - 81% compared to the England (All Schools) average of 81%; Maths - 78% compared to the England (All Schools) average of 78%; Science - 88% compared to the England (All Schools) average of 88%.

NB: As a result of the removal of 'borderlining' in 2008, figures for this year are not directly comparable to previous years.

• For 2006-09, £89.8m of TCF has been allocated to projects in the region (this excludes TCF allocations made towards Phase 1 BSF One School Pathfinder projects).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

• For 2009-11, a total of £136m of TCF has been allocated to LAs in the region not receiving funding under waves 1-6 of the BSF programme, to support the provision of facilities for the delivery of 14-19 diplomas and/or to improve special educational needs facilities.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

• 2 authority/ies in the region (Hampshire, Kent) has/have been chosen as a pathfinder/pathfinders to pilot the 15 year, Primary Capital Programme (23 LAs chosen nationally); each LA will receive £6.5m in 2008-09.
