It is with great sadness that we are sharing the news of the death of Cllr Peter Campbell, councillor for Central Harbour.

Here are a few words from Cllr Rick Everitt, leader of Thanet District Council:

“Ramsgate – and Central Harbour ward, in particular – has lost a fierce champion with the death of Councillor Peter Campbell today.

Peter was Labour through and through, but his dedication to serving his residents and the council was such that he won the respect and admiration of officers and elected members across the council. Nobody had a greater appetite for attending meetings, whether at Thanet District Council or Ramsgate Town Council, and his grasp of procedure and detail made him a valuable resource to fellow old hands and new councillors alike.

First elected to TDC in 2007, after moving to Thanet from East London in retirement from BT, he relished his new responsibility and it was no accident that when Labour was reduced to just four councillors in the 2015 election that he was one of the survivors. He always spoke up for Ramsgate and his residents knew it. Even on his final sickbed, he was dealing with emails form residents and colleagues.

He was also a familiar figure walking around the seafront with his partner Mitzi and his beloved dogs.

Peter was a former chair of Ramsgate branch and most recently chair of Ramsgate Town Council, to which he was elected for the first time in 2011 and really enjoyed, but he wasn’t someone with leadership ambitions. He was most comfortable being an outspoken backbencher who never held back in debate and always had a sensible point to make. He was also good fun.

As well as an outstanding colleague, I have lost a very good friend who always encouraged and supported me personally, and on whose advice I often relied.

All our thoughts today are with Mitzi and his extended family, who were never far from his mind when he wasn’t on council business. They should take comfort in the knowledge that the whole of South Thanet CLP, Thanet District Council and many, many Central Harbour residents will share their grief at his passing.”
