JOIN US FOR A NIGHT PROTEST AGAINST THANET’S HOUSING CRISIS

Press release from Cllr Karen Constantine

‘Sleep Out Saturday’ – live action, will involve members and supporters of our kinder local Labour Party, armed with sleeping bags and blankets, taking the issue of the terrible plight of the homeless, directly to the streets where it exists and festers.

A countywide challenge, homelessness is prevalent across Thanet, with little, or no, means in place to deal with it.  Easy to ignore for many, it has a devastating impact on the lives of those it affects.  A place to rest one’s head, to prepare and eat food, to raise your family and to feel safe and secure is a basic human right.

We seek to draw attention to the appalling situation of both, homelessness and the housing crisis and to call upon our local council to take some positive steps to address it.  These should include:

1. Lay some bricks – not one has been laid down since this council came to power.

2. To encourage TDC to do much more to help families and single people with accommodation.

3.  The arrangement of temporary accommodation.

4. To ensure that all people experiencing this distress are treated with the utmost respect.

In these times of increasing uncertainty, homelessness can happen to anyone.  It is also avoidable, and with a more compassionate direction and focus, it can be changed.  Having homeless people in our society is of benefit to absolutely nobody.
